CHAPTER 1

It was a hot summer day, not like any other day. My big brother Joey woke up to a surprise. On the hood of his new car stood a grey pigeon with bright purple and green feathers around his neck. Not unlike any other pigeon he thought, but that would not be enough to say!

Try as my brother could to wave him away, the pigeon would not go, he would not fly away. All of a sudden he jumped off the car and onto the driveway. He strutted around as if to say "Good day!" Funny bird Joey thought. "Okay so he wants to stay!" He put him in a cage and drove away!

I woke up that morning to find a pretty bird caged up inside. I thought "This was not right, a wild bird deserves to fly". So I opened the cage to set him free. To my surprise the bird just stood there starring at me. He walked out of the cage, and strutted around as if to say "Good day" in a very funny little way. Try as I could to wave him away; the bird would not go; he would not fly away. I left him there and went inside to play.

My brother came home later that day. He checked the cage and the bird was gone. He asked me if I had let him go. I said "Yes silly, he had to be free, he had to fly home to his family". We ran outside to check if he was truly gone, excited to find him once again. The bird had not flown away.

Just at that moment our dog came out to play. The pigeon flew towards him, landing in front of him, strutting on the sidewalk again in the same little way. The dog did not know what to do and to my surprise he let the bird climb aboard him that day. This was quite a sight! A dog, with a pigeon on his back; two very unlikely friends walking away!

This pigeon would not fly away. He started to perch himself at all our windows. If we were eating dinner he would be at the kitchen window. When we were in the family room watching TV, again at the window he would be. He wanted to be part of our family.

We knew from that day that this pigeon was special in every way. I would fall asleep to his cooing sounds at my bedroom window during the night. Then every morning he would wake me up as if to say, "time to get up and start your day!"
