About the Author

Carol Roth has always loved writing. Carol’s many wonderful books include The Little School Bus, Who Will Tuck Me in Tonight?, Five Little Ducklings Go to School, and Hold Your Temper, Tiger! Her books have won a Children’s Choice Book Award (2005), the Missouri Building Block Award for Best Picture Book (2003), and the Parent’s Guide to Children’s Media Award for Outstanding Achievement in Children’s Books (1999). Carol lives in New Jersey (USA) with her husband, Mark.

Rashin Kheiriyeh is a multi-award-winning author-illustrator, animator, and painter who has more than ninety children’s books to her credit. Her books have been published in at least twelve countries and she was nominated for the 2023 & 2024 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award for outstanding contributions to children's literature. She is also the recipient of a Sendak Fellowship Award, a 2009 New Horizon Award (Bologna Ragazzi), and is a six-time winner of the Bologna Book Fair Illustration competition. Rashin Kheiriyeh is the character artist of the most popular animation series on national television in Iran called “Shekarestan” (“Sugarland”). She now lives in Washington, DC.

Younger readers will enjoy hearing about Little Tiger as well as want to read it on their own. The lesson portrayed is invaluable for pre-K and K-2nd. When Little Tiger realizes that his egotism has left him friendless, he makes a 180-degree turnabout.

Having solved his anger-management issues in Hold Your Temper, Tiger (2017), our hero happily starts school. Alas, Little Tiger shows no consideration for his classmates. He grabs Mouse’s paintbrush, pushes young Wolf aside, and kicks Duck out of the sandbox. Little Tiger is surprised to find that he’s not happy: No one wants to play with him. His teacher sees him sitting forlornly at his desk and offers advice: “If you are nice to them, they will be nice to you.” Although he begins “with small things,” his reversal is quick and complete; he shares, asks politely to join in, admires his classmates’ work, and in general is such a paragon of courtesy that when it’s time for him to sing solo, everyone is stunned by his enormous, enthusiastic ROAR. Most characters have round faces with dots for eyes and lines for mouths. A deep saturated red appears throughout the bright, naïve illustrations, bringing to life the slide, sandbox, seesaws, and tables, in contrast to a deep turquoise for the sky and tan for backgrounds. Though Little Tiger turns things around much faster than most kids would, it’s still a solid lesson in being a good classmate, enhanced by vibrant, childlike visuals. The transition is abrupt, but the message is clear—and valuable. (Picture book. 4-8)
