About the Author

Giovanni Meli (1740-1815) was the greatest poet of Sicily who projected his struggle between optimism and pessimism, idealism and pragmatism onto the characters of Don Chisciotti and Sanciu Panza. He is one of the most important poets of eighteeenth century Italy whofor his wisdom, humor and poetic genius deserves to be known more widely than he is.
