About the Author

Ben Lerwill has been working as a freelance travel writer for over fifteen years. His work has appeared in more than fifty national and international publications, from The Sunday Times to National Geographic Traveler. He is thrilled that, through children’s books, he can share his enthusiasm about the wider world with young readers. Ben Lerwill lives with his family in Oxfordshire, England.

Katharine McEwen has illustrated more than thirty books for children, including the Who’s Hiding series, and has collaborated with many well-known authors, including Allan Ahlberg and Michael Rosen. K-Gr 3—A beautiful book that aims to bring children closer to the world of mammals. Told through the prism of babies' experiences, each page poses a question such as "Do you suck your thumb?" or "Did you wobble when you started to walk?" and "Do you have any loose teeth?" Wild and domesticated mammals are included in the various questions. The comparisons with young children are well chosen to pique curious minds and create an understanding of our shared traits. Outstanding collage illustrations are replete with charming details, while maintaining realistic depictions. Attention to backgrounds, natural flora, and color schemes add to the experience. This title can be enjoyed by older students, but really lends itself well to being read aloud. Discussions could easily segue to continents, the environment, animal protection, and our place in the world vis-à-vis those animals. VERDICT This title belongs in most elementary nonfiction libraries. Pair it with Steve Jenkins's The Animal Toolkit for a visually engaging experience about the creatures around us and how much we all have in common.—Elisabeth LeBris
