About the Author

Chris Gall has been a certified diver for more than 20 years. He once encountered a manta ray bigger than a car, but has only seen one shark, and it happened to be asleep in an undersea cave. He is the award-winning author and illustrator of such books as Dinotrux, Substitute Creacher, Dog vs. Cat, and many others. His nonfiction books include Go For the Moon, Jumbo, and Big Rig Rescue. He lives in Tucson, Arizona.

Chris Gall has been drawing pictures for as long as he can remember. When he was caught doodling on his desk in second grade, his teacher suggested that he might become an artist some day, then made him clean all the desks in the classroom. In seventh grade, Chris won a Read Magazine Young Writers Award, and that inspired him to create stories to go with his art. After graduating from the University of Arizona, Chris became an award-winning, internationally recognized illustrator, and his artwork has been shown in almost every publication in America, including Time, Newsweek, People, Fortune, The New York Times, and The Washington Post.

In 2004, his first picture book, America the Beautiful, became a Publishers Weekly Best Children’s Book of the Year, and his career in children’s publishing began. Since then he has authored and illustrated more than a dozen books, including the acclaimed Dinotrux, a 2009 Publishers Weekly Best Children’s book, Dog Vs. Cat, Awesome Dawson, Substitute Creacher, Nanobots, The Littlest Train, and Go For the Moon. In 2015 Dreamworks Animation adapted Dinotrux into a television series for Netflix. Chris lives in Tucson, Arizona.

An overview of undersea venturing, from ancient sponge diving to explorations with modern submersibles.

Gall pairs a stodgy recitation of names and basic facts with cleanly drawn depictions of early diving suits and other gear down through the ages—beginning with hollow reeds used by ancient Greek divers and ending with an out-of-scale Alvin submarine cruising past the wreck of the Titanic. All are depicted being used or tested by a racially diverse cast of frozen-faced divers, inventors, and bridge construction workers. Along with livelier views of brightly colored sea life both real and fanciful, he also mixes in anatomical diagrams to illustrate the effects of pressure and compression. Throughout, Gall depicts a biracial family—oddly stony of mien, like the other humans—preparing for adventurous vacations, exploring a coral reef, and conducting simple science demonstrations. Both the evolving technology on display and the dramatic deep-sea settings and naturalistic flora and fauna are worth lingering over. But for readers seeking more vivid and detailed pictures of the dangers and discomforts of undersea exploration, Aly Brown’s The Last Unexplored Place on Earth (2023) makes a grand follow-up. A perfunctory list of information sources is appended, along with a warning about the hazards of climate-warming oceans and, less tangentially, general remarks on diver training and careers at the end.
