Overview

Take a closer look at the world we live in with the Discover The World Around Us book set. Young readers uncover a world of things they can't see—from miniscule molecules to high altitude winds—while finding excitement in the things they may not have noticed—from the shape of flowers to a stolen shoelace tucked in a squirrel's nest. Your conversations will be richer as you start discussing three-dimensional shapes, universal standards of measurement, cloud identification and weather forecasting, and the animals in your backyard or across the globe.

The engaging and accessible style of these books encourages kids to apply the lessons in everyday life, and to make their own discoveries about the world around them. These clever and colorful picture books, including Mole and Tell, Spheres All Year, Look Up To See What the Weather Will Be, and This Is How I Grow, are perfect elementary books for building the foundation for a lifelong love of STEM.

About the Author

Elizabeth Everett, author of This Is the Sun, spent 16 years as a classroom teacher before venturing into writing. Inspired by her energetic youngster, Jalen, and his love for books, she took her background in education and meshed it with his childhood interests. The result was edu-tainment in the form of children’s books! She currently lives in Colorado with her family where they love spending time outdoors in the Western sun. The author of Look Up to See What the Weather Will Be, Guy Brown, is a TV meteorologist who can be seen forecasting the weather on-air today in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area of Minnesota. He enjoys volunteering at local elementary schools, where he shares his passion for meteorology with children. He also dabbles in acrylic painting, and is an active member of the National Weather Association and the National Association of Black Journalists. Catherine Payne, author of Mole and Tell, worked as a journalist after earning master’s degrees from Harvard and Columbia Universities. After returning to her native Guam, she became an English instructor and tutor. Catherine especially loves writing books that transport children to happy places. The inspiration she draws from Pacific cultures helps her appreciate the interconnectedness of all things. When John Payne II, Catherine’s brother and co-author of Mole and Tell, discovered superhero comic books, it sparked a lifelong love of reading that led to an interest in speech and language. After pursuing degrees at San José State University and the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, John now works with kids as a speech clinician in Guam. Dia L. Michels, author of This Is How I Grow, is an award-winning science and parenting writer who has authored or edited over a dozen books for both children and adults. While her topics include science and math books for middle grade students, her passion is promoting attachment parenting and supporting breastfeeding. A popular speaker, she lectures frequently at conferences, universities, libraries, and schools around the country. The mother of three grown children, she lives in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C., with five cats and a dog.
