Discover the Holy Land: A Travel Guide to Israel and Jordan
This travel guide focuses on places that Holy Land tour groups typically visit and gives major attention to connections between the Bible and the land. The Holy Land is understood to overlap both present-day Israel and Jordan, so places like Gilead, Mount Nebo, Bethany-beyond-the-Jordan, and Petra are included. And while the biblical periods and biblical connections remain in the forefront, these are explored in the context of the Holy Land's long and fascinating history. Ancient "tells" dating back to the Bronze Age, colonnaded streets and temples from Hellenistic and Roman times, early Christian pilgrimage destinations, Crusader castles, Mamluk and Ottoman fortifications--all illustrated with chronological charts, maps, site plans, and photographs.

What People are Saying About This

From the Publisher

“What is sure to become the definitive travel guide to the Holy Land, informed by decades of travel and tour-guide experience in the Middle East, along with scholarly expertise acquired throughout a distinguished career as a biblical scholar; enhanced by Miller’s own carefully drawn maps, informative diagrams and charts, and illustrative color photographs. Required reading not only for Holy Land travelers but also for those seriously interested in the history and culture of the Middle East, especially Jordan and Israel, with special attention given to the ways in which archaeological and historical research inform our reading of the Jewish and Christian Bibles.”

—Carl R. Holladay, C. H. Candler Professor Emeritus of New Testament, Emory University, Candler School of Theology

“No one knows the Holy Land better than Max Miller. He has been excavating and leading trips to the Middle East for forty years. . . . This is not just a tourist’s guidebook but a college course taught by a preeminent archaeologist, historian, and Bible scholar. It is an indispensable guide for the traveler on the road and is also highly instructive for anyone interested in the historical, cultural, and religious significance of this land.”

—Steven L. McKenzie, Professor of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, Rhodes College
