About the Author

Joseph Fewsmith is Associate Professor for International Relations at Boston University and Director of the East Asian Interdisciplinary Studies Program. He received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago in 1980, after which he did post-graduate work at the Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Califomia-Berkeley. He is the editor of Chinese Economic Studies and the author of Party, State, and Local Elites in Republican China (1985).
