She describes her experiences as a medical officer in an Airforce Base and as New Zealand's first female medical superintendent of a major hospital in the 1970s. Since the 1980s Margaret has been at the forefront of gerontology in New Zealand, helping to plan the country's care for its elderly citizens, through government, voluntary and professional channels. In 1997 Margaret was awarded a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for Services to Gerontology.
