About the Author

JOHN O'LOUGHLIN, Professor of Geography at the University of Colorado at Boulder, has written at length about political and social geography and the geography of international relations. His recent books include New Political Geography of Eastern Europe (1993), War and Its Consequences (1993), and Foreign Minorities in Continental European Cities (1987).

This dictionary contains 219 alphabetically arranged entries on all aspects of geopolitics from 1870 to date. The entries, which are primarily essays, focus on the United States, France, Britain, and Germany, with numerous cross references assisting access. The USSR and China are generally excluded from consideration since these Communist countries supposedly viewed geopolitics as a purely Western phenomenon. Their exclusion is not entirely convincing at the governmental level, especially for the USSR and its precursor, czarist Russia. Indeed, there are several entries relating to the Soviet Union, such as ``Brezhnev Doctrine.'' There is also a surprisingly large number of Brazilian geopolitical entries. Aside from a few dated foreign-language works, this reviewer could find little else available that is similar in topic and scope to this reference work. Still, there is no reason to believe that this book will receive significant use except in the most specialized libraries or when the excellent bibliography is needed.
