About the Author

When Stewart Scott was asked to play the role of Santa Claus for a regional shopping mall outside of Chicago, he was told, “You’ll hear some funny stories and some heartbreaking ones too.” That advice prompted his book, “Diary of a Mall Santa.”

Scott began his writing career at the University of Missouri School of Journalism as a part-time reporter for a small town daily newspaper. After graduation and a tour in the U.S. Navy, he joined an advertising agency in St. Louis; forty years later he retired as creative director and CEO of a boutique ad agency near Chicago.

When Scott was only 15, the encouragement of a high school English teacher ignited his goal to become a writer. The advertising agency business provided the opportunity to write creative copy for ads, direct mail, commercials, sales literature, annual reports, and documentaries. Good advertising copy needs to capture the imagination of the consumer, just as compelling literature must touch the heart of the reader.

If you prefer to believe that Santa Claus is nothing more than a retail icon, fabricated to boost sales for shopping centers, malls, and department stores, “Diary of a Mall Santa” might not appeal to you.
The author patterned his Santa role after the original St. Nicholas, a real-life character from the third century. St. Nicholas started the tradition of gift giving during the Christmas holidays. He loved children and cared deeply for people in need.

That doesn’t mean Scott is without flaws. His saintly Santa Claus demeanor was challenged on a daily basis, and he didn't always past the test.

Scott lives in Homewood, Illinois with his wife Jean. They have five adult children and 11 grandchildren.
