About The Author

L. Ron Hubbard

There are only two tests of a life well lived L. Ron Hubbard once remarked: Did one do as one intended? And were people glad one lived? In testament to the first stands the full body of his life’s work, including some 12,000 writings and 3,000 tape-recorded lectures of Dianetics and Scientology.   In evidence of the second are the hundreds of millions of individuals whose lives have been demonstrably bettered because he lived. They are the more than 28 million students now reading superlatively owing to L. Ron Hubbard’s educational discoveries; they are the millions of men and women freed from substance abuse through L. Ron Hubbard’s breakthroughs in drug rehabilitation; they are the near 100 million who have been touched by his nonreligious moral code: and they are the many millions more who hold his work to be the spiritual cornerstone of their lives.

Although best known for Dianetics and Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard cannot be so simply categorized. If nothing else, his life was too varied, his influence too broad. There are tribesmen in Southern Africa, for example, who know nothing of Dianetics and Scientology, but they know L. Ron Hubbard the educator.  Likewise, there are factory workers in Albania who know him only for his administrative discoveries; children in China who know him only as the author of their moral code, and readers in dozens of languages who know him only for his novels. So, no, L. Ron Hubbard is not an easy man to categorize and certainly does not fit popular misconceptions of “religious founder” as an aloof and contemplative figure. Yet the more one comes to know this man and his achievements, the more one comes to realize he was precisely the sort of person to have brought us Scientology, the only major religion to have been founded in the twentieth century.

What Scientology offers is likewise what one would expect of a man such as  L. Ron Hubbard. For not only does it provide a fully unique approach to our most fundamental questions—Who are we? From where did we come and what is our destiny? But it further provides an equally unique technology for greater spiritual awareness. So how would we expect to characterize the founder of such a religion? Clearly, he would have to be larger than life, attracted to people, liked by people, dynamic, charismatic and immensely capable in a dozen fields—all exactly L. Ron Hubbard.

The fact is, if Mr. Hubbard had stopped after only one of his many accomplishments he would still be celebrated today. For example, with 46 million works of fiction in circulation, including such monumental bestsellers as Battlefield Earth, Fear and the Mission Earth series, Mr. Hubbard is unquestionably one of the most acclaimed and widely read authors of all time. His novels have earned some of the world’s most prestigious literary awards, and he has very genuinely been described as “one of the most prolific and influential writers of the twentieth century.”

His earlier accomplishments are similarly impressive. As a barnstorming aviator through the 1930s he was known as “Flash” and broke local records for sustained glider flight. As a leader of expeditions, he is credited with conducting the first complete Puerto Rican mineralogical survey under United States protectorship and his navigational annotations still influence the maritime guides for British Columbia. His experimentation with early radio direction finding further became the basis for the Long Range Navigational system (Loran). And, as a lifelong photographer, his works have been displayed in galleries on two continents, with the definitive body of his photographs in traveling and permanent exhibits still drawing tens of thousands every year.

Among other avenues of research, Mr. Hubbard developed and codified an administrative technology that is utilized by more than 200,000 organizations worldwide, including multinational corporations, charitable bodies, political parties, schools, youth clubs and every imaginable small business. Likewise Mr. Hubbard’s internationally acclaimed educational methods are utilized by more than a hundred thousand educators, while his equally acclaimed drug rehabilitation program has proven at least five times more effective than similarly aimed programs.

Yet, however impressive these figures, no measure of L. Ron Hubbard is complete without some appreciation of what became his life’s work: Dianetics and Scientology.  The world’s most effective force for positive change, the Church of Scientology represents spiritual freedom for millions of people the world over. They come from every walk of life, every culture and every strata of society. Moreover, when one is speaking of L. Ron Hubbard’s discoveries relating to the human mind and spirit, one is ultimately speaking of the philosophic foundation of all he accomplished: better education, crime-free cities, drug-free campuses, stable and ethical organizations and cultural revitalization through the arts—all this and more is made possible because of the breakthroughs in Dianetics and Scientology.

Excerpt From: Dianetics The Modern Science of Mental Health

Of what must a science of mind be composed?

1. An answer to the goal of thought.

2. A single source of all insanities, psychoses, neuroses, compulsions, repressions and social derangements.

3. Invariant scientific evidence as to the basic nature and functional background of the human mind.

4. Techniques (the art of application) by which the discovered single source could be invariably cured, ruling out, of course, the insanities of malformed, deleted or pathologically injured brains or nervous systems and, particularly, iatrogenic psychoses (those caused by doctors and involving the destruction of the living brain itself).

5. Methods of prevention of mental derangement.

6. The cause and cure of all psychosomatic ills, which number, some say, 70 percent of Man’s listed ailments.

Such a science would exceed the severest terms previously laid down for it in any age, but any computation on the subject should discover that a science of mind ought to be able to be and do just these things.

A science of the mind, if it were truly worthy of that name, would have to rank in experimental precision with physics and chemistry. There could be no “special cases” to its laws. There could be no recourse to Authority. The atom bomb bursts whether Einstein gives it permission or not. Laws native to Nature regulate the bursting of that bomb. Technicians, applying techniques derived from discovered natural laws, can make one or a million atom bombs all alike.

After the body of axioms and technique was organized and working as a science of mind, in rank with the physical sciences, it would be found to have points of agreement with almost every school of thought about thought which had ever existed. This is again a virtue and not a fault.

Simple though it is, Dianetics does and is these things:

1. It is an organized science of thought built on definite axioms: statements of natural laws on the order of those of the physical sciences.

2. It contains a therapeutic technique with which can be treated all inorganic mental ills and all organic psychosomatic ills, with assurance of complete cure in unselected cases.

3. It produces a condition of ability and rationality for Man well in advance of the current norm, enhancing rather than destroying his vigor and personality.

4. Dianetics gives a complete insight into the full potentialities of the mind, discovering them to be well in excess of past supposition.

5. The basic nature of Man is discovered in Dianetics, rather than hazarded or postulated, since that basic nature can be brought into action in any individual completely. And that basic nature is discovered to be good.

6. The single source of mental derangement is discovered and demonstrated on a clinical or laboratory basis by Dianetics.

7. The extent, storage capacity and recallability of the human memory is finally established by Dianetics.

8. The full recording abilities of the mind are discovered by Dianetics with the conclusion that they are quite dissimilar to former suppositions.

9. Dianetics brings forth the non-germ theory of disease, complementing biochemistry and Pasteur’s work on the germ theory to embrace the field.

10. With Dianetics ends the “necessity” of destroying the brain by shock or surgery to effect “tractability” in mental patients and “adjust” them.

11. A workable explanation of the physiological effects of drugs and endocrine substances exists in Dianetics and many problems posed by endocrinology are answered.

12. Various educational, sociological, political, military and other human studies are enhanced by Dianetics.

13. The field of cytology is aided by Dianetics, as well as other fields of research.

This, then, is a skeletal sketch of what would be the scope of a science of mind and of what is the scope of Dianetics

What People are Saying About This

Billy Sheehan

In the early days, I would stand with one part of my foot on the amplifier and my eyes pinned downwards. Using Dianetics technology, I became more and more freed up. I used to play one note with one finger and now there are no limits. I came out of a shell. And that happened as a result of Dianetics. I have little attention on the past now, I only have attention on the present and future. Dianetics helps bring your creative horsepower way up.
— Top rock bassist for "Mr. Big"

Schumann

As with all great books, the impact of Dianetics means that the world will never be the same again. History has become a race between Dianetics and catastrophe. Dianetics will win if enough people are challenged, in time, to understand it.
— Writing in the New York Times

John Travolta

Dianetics put me into the big time. I always had the ability to be somewhat successful, but Dianetics freed me up to the point where something really big could happen, without interference.

David Singer

Power of healing, a successful life, and happiness - all yours by mere thought. Sounds like a science fiction book or movie right? Wrong. It is Dianetics and it is a real science of the mind and its powers. In 1950, L. Ron Hubbard wrote about this science in a book aptly named Dianetics. The book deals with your mind and how your thoughts can affect your current state of health. It speaks of a way that you can make your life better simply by thinking about it. I read this book over the course of two weeks and it has been one of the best books that I have read in years. It did not change my life overnight, or in a week but it did make me think about things I do in life, and why I do them. It makes the reader realize that ever action leads to a reaction, no matter how small the reaction. You might be skeptical about the idea of power of thought, but even if you are Dianetics is a book that I would highly suggest reading. It will show you things about you thought processes that you never knew. I give this book a 5 out of 5 open minds. It's definitely a book to read.

Interviews

“We have around us today many problems: problems of the criminal, war, individual illness and juvenile delinquency.   We are faced with very intimate and vital problems which we are not, as a large society, adequately solving.  Dianetics has introduced into the society a technique by which it is possible to increase the potential working groups in the country.

“I would like to tell you a little more about Dianetics, its general ability to remedy some of the troubles and problems with which the community, the individual, the nation are faced.   We have quite a few things in this society today which need remedying, and we are in a little bit better position to remedy these things.

“Dianetics is a series of techniques, tested on an engineering basis, which do things with the science of thought.   You hear people say, ‘Dianetics?  This is probably just another idea.   If we sleep on featherbeds we will all be much healthier, etc.’  This is the sort of thing that has been going on in the past about thought itself: ‘If you sit with your legs crossed for fifteen minutes every morning and say, ‘Every day in every way we are getting better and better, ‘” etc.   In the past they were trying to sell this sort of thing as a substitute  for a good science of thought.   The public is very justly suspicious of anything new that pretends to do something about the human mind.

“We have reached the place where we can blow a whole town off the face of the earth, drive automobiles at 110 miles an hour and unload how many tons of weight, where, at such and such a time, but nobody has been adequately studying the human mind itself.

“Doctors know that human ills stem from the mind.   New remedies come out: ‘All you have to do is take so-and-so and life is wonderful.’  The thinking medical men, however, who have ability and who have done observations on their own, know that none of these medicines are panaceas….   With 75% of man’s ills very little advance has been made…”

“In Dianetics we demonstrate the fact that we have techniques to do away with psychosomatic illnesses.   People say, ‘Why didn’t someone know this before?  Why didn’t someone know that we could recover all our memories of childhood?

“One day I ran into a lady.   She hadn’t known who her parents were... Her parents had died before she knew them.   I took her back to the period where she could see her parents.  We found her name, what her birthday was, where her parents had died, of what they had died, etc.  She came back to present time in a remarkable state, tremendously enthused.   Interesting to me that four psychiatrists had worked on this lady and were in the audience.  Two came up and confessed to me that they had thrown this patient at me to prove that Dianetics did not work.  They had worked on her for five years and considered her the hardest patient in the area.   These two gentlemen were more courteous to me after that.

“I have received a letter from a gentleman in the Midwest who wants us at the Foundation to send him a certified auditor trained in these techniques in order to instruct the staff of an entire sanitarium in order to accomplish what they have not accomplished before.

“They did not know how thought works, what are the parts of the mind, etc.  As a consequence they could not predict how a person would react under certain circumstances.  They did not recognize that when a nation goes to war it was in a period of madness.

“Dianetics is interested in experimentation in order to increase the application of these techniques.   Our research department is very hard at work running a pilot project on a small group in order to perfect these applications of Group Dianetics.  In a few days Group Dianetics has taken an apathetic company and has brought it up to where its income potential has almost doubled.   These things are the vital stuff out of which we hope to make a larger and better future for the world.”

L. Ron Hubbard                                                                                                                                 Radio broadcast given on 8 February 1951
