Overview

Released a matter of weeks after Dolly Parton's 2022 induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Diamonds & Rhinestones: The Greatest Hits Collection certainly emphasizes the pop side of Parton. Opening with "9 to 5," the number one hit that confirmed her superstardom in 1980, the single-disc compilation then speeds through her other crossover perennials -- "Jolene," "Here You Come Again," "Islands in the Stream," "I Will Always Love You," "Coat of Many Colors" -- before touching upon some of her first solo country hits, then returning to her glitzier pop numbers and latter-day material before returning to the early '70s. The nonchronological sequencing is slightly disorienting, yet it emphasizes the depth and variety of Parton's catalog. If the collection kind of tapers off into collaborations that don't add much to the story, well, that's also representative of her later work, where the sublime and ridiculous existed hand in hand. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
