Description: This overview of ultrasound imaging techniques in the pediatric population is a combination of organ-based and system-based discussions of pathologies encountered in children, reinforced by many annotated ultrasound images.
Purpose: Intended as a "one-stop shop" for practical pediatric ultrasonography, the book is designed to serve as a guide to daily practice, highlighting the vital role ultrasound plays in imaging of pediatric patients. The disease entities are discussed in depth with the intent of teaching through images, which are plentiful.
Audience: The authors' intended audience is general radiologists, pediatric radiologists, radiology residents, and pediatricians. The book is well suited for this audience, particularly given the high quality of the images. The contributing authors are from a variety of backgrounds and countries, all with different healthcare systems. This variety enriches the book by incorporating techniques and experiences from many different experts.
Features: A very useful chapter describes how to perform pediatric ultrasound examinations to optimize not only imaging technique, but also patient and parent comfort. This is a topic of great value that is not frequently addressed in imaging books. The length of each chapter and the amount of information is well balanced to provide a well-rounded discussion of normal anatomy and pathologies without overwhelming readers. Perhaps the most attractive feature of the book is the large number of high quality ultrasound images. The figures are well annotated, although some of the captions are challenging to follow. The authors cover all relevant organ-based systems including cranial ultrasound, spine imaging, imaging of the genitourinary tract, and procedures in pediatric imaging. One particularly notable challenge in the cranial ultrasound section is the difference in terminology between the European literature (the authors) and common terms used in the U.S. The frequent use of abbreviations creates an additional level of confusion. The chapter on splenic imaging is particularly well done and quite comprehensive. Both commonly and uncommonly encountered splenic pathologies are well discussed and illustrated. The book includes access to a website with imaging clips, but accessing the website is not intuitive and the site it slightly cumbersome to navigate. However, the content is of high quality once it can be viewed and it is a nice adjunct to the static images. The problem is that it is not entirely user friendly to have the imaging clips online without the accompanying text, as it is unlikely that users will alternate between the print and online formats while reading for comprehension.
Assessment: This book provides a well-rounded, balanced discussion of pediatric ultrasound across different organ systems. The authors are successful in their stated goal of providing an adequate amount of written text augmented by a plethora of high quality ultrasound images and video clips. By far, the images are the most useful component of the book and are, in themselves, worth reading the book. "Picture flipping" (looking at images and reading the captions) before an examination or to reinforce knowledge is high yield in this offering.
