About the Author

Dr. Kradin is board certified in both Pathology and Internal Medicine and is on the staff of the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Pulmonary Critical Care unit and the Department of Pathology where he is responsible for infectious disease pathology and pulmonary disease pathology. Dr. Kradin is MGH trained and is the author of over 125 peer-reviewed papers. The Massachusetts General Hospital sees a wide spectrum of infectious disease as it is a major tertiary referral center and transplant center and has a division of tropical disease. The book will draw upon the expertise of both pathologists and clinicians from this hospital. Research interests include pulmonary pathology, pulmonary immunity, infectious disease, stress and immunity, and asbestos-related disease.

Description: This second edition of an up-to-date, practical guide to the pathology of infectious disease covers the morphology of organisms and host response to infection with additional commentary on ancillary diagnostic modalities, complete with curated images, excellent tables, and well-organized text. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The aim is to provide a practical reference to help pathologists recognize patterns of disease including organism morphology and host response to infection. It has up-to-date information and is well organized with easy-to-read tables, supplemented by numerous images.
Audience: It is intended for general pathologists and trainees, but is also relevant for subspecialists, as it covers all tissues and body systems. Microbiologists also would find this to be an excellent resource to correlate laboratory findings with in vivo disease processes. Infectious disease physicians and surgeons also may find it useful. It is written predominantly by the expert faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Features: The book flows from the general approach to diagnosing infection with specifics on biopsy, cytology, and electron microscopy. It then addresses new technologies and ancillary techniques to supplement histology. Finally, the book systematically covers infections of organs in 15 detailed chapters. Each chapter begins with a concise outline and focuses on infectious disease as it presents in surgical pathology, with an emphasis on the nuances and pearls from the experience of the expert authors. The curators are experts in their fields and their chapters reflect their wealth of knowledge and experience, providing readers with tools and insight they can apply to their own practices.
