Description: This book highlights progress in understanding the pathogenesis and treatment of lymphoma, leukemia, multiple myeloma, and myelodysplasia.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide insights for both the practicing hematologist and the academic clinician into the new classification schemes, pathogenesis, prognostic features, and treatment approaches to a variety of hematologic malignancies. This is a rapidly advancing field, and not all of these objectives are met in this volume.
Audience: The audience is hematologists/oncologists and hematology fellows.
Features: The chapter on therapy of diffuse aggressive lymphomas is outstanding. The editors have comprehensively reviewed the clinical trials of standard chemotherapy and dose-intensive chemotherapy with stem cell support, and have carefully analyzed the merits of each clinical trial. They review the use of the International Prognostic Index to risk stratify patients, and their treatment recommendations for specific subgroups of aggressive lymphomas are well balanced.
Assessment: This book would benefit from a chapter on advances (such as rituximab) in the treatment of low grade lymphomas, and a discussion of "mini transplants" for treatment of hematologic malignancies. The Revised European-American lymphoma classification scheme is covered in two places in this book, as are posttransplantation lymphoproliferative disorders. Not all experts on HIV-associated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma would agree that low dose CHOP is the standard of care; many would recommend full dose CHOP with ongoing highly active anti-retroviral therapy and cytokine support. Many of the chapters in this book will be useful to clinicians who care for patients with hematologic malignancies.
