Diagnosis Of Plant Viruses And Allied Pathogens
For the past 35 years I have been working on viruses diseases of plants, the characterization of associated viruses, their detection by biological, serological and molecular techniques. After 2005, it was my privilege to offer short and long courses (group and hands-on training) on plant viruses, their characterization and development of diagnostics. These courses were provided to university teachers, research organizations, Government officials, senior professors and Quarantine scientists. During these trainings, most of the trainee scientists desired that a compilation with detail protocols should be developed. With teaching, research and trainees requirement in mind, this book has been written to provide detail protocols of each and every experiment related to plant virology based on the experience, I had gained working on plant virology.

During his research career he discovered several virus and phytoplasma diseases infecting temperate fruit crops, citrus, maize, wheat, Brassicas, radish, vegetables and flowers. However, the major interest of Prof. Ahlawat had been in virus and virus like diseases of citrus. Prof. Ahlawat served as Incharge of advanced centre for Plant Virology developed with the assistance of UNDP of FAO and also the Virology Unit of IARI. He was also assigned the responsibility of Nodal officer to monitor about 100 World Bank funded NATP projects at IARI. During his 37 years of research career, Dr. Ahlawat guided 9 Ph.D and 4 M.Sc. students. He published over 150 research papers in reputed scientific journals. He handled both National and International projects on virus and virus-like pathogens such as: Indo-Frech project on citrus greening, ICAR-AP-Cess Fund on diagnostics, three National Agriculture Technology Projects one each on Diagnostics, HRD, Priority setting, monitoring and evaluation, DBT project on National Facility for Virus diagnosis and quality control of tissue culture-raised plants. Under HRD project Dr. Ahlawat conducted 4 group trainings of 15-20 Scientists and 18 hands- on trainings for 3-6 months on various aspects of plant virology. One refresher course was organized for senior professors from Indian Universities on molecular diagnosis of plant viruses. Based on the quality of training on detection of plant pathogens, ICAR Appreciation Certificate 1998 was awarded to Dr. Ahlawat. The research contributions made by Prof. Ahlawat have been recognized nationally and internationally. Nationally, he received several honors and awards such as Professor M.S.Pavgi Award 2005 from Indian Phytopathological Society (IPS), Purnima Raychaudhuri memorial Lecture Award 2004, H.D. Chapman Award 1999 for outstanding research contributions in Citriculture from Indian Society of Citriculture (ISC). Dr. Ahlawat is a member and fellow of several national and international professional societies and served them in various capacities such as President IPS and several others. As FAO Fellow, Dr Ahlawat worked at the University of California, Riverside and at Instituto Biologico at Sao Paulo, Brazil. He visited University of California again as IBPGR Expert to develop guidelines for safe movement of citrus germplasm. He participated and chaired scientific sessions in several national and international symposia in India and abroad. Professor Ahlawat visited INRA at Bordeux in France twice as visiting Professor.
