Description:This is a comprehensive review of the acute and chronic consequences of diabetes in the brain. In addition to describing the effects of diabetes complications on the brain, it uniquely gives an update on diabetes for neurologists and an update on stroke and dementia for diabetologists. Current research is discussed to give an understanding of the future of this field.
Purpose:It is intended as an update on the acute and chronic consequences of diabetes in the brain. This is a worthy objective as diabetes has several well-recognized severe cerebral complications which should be monitored, but the disease also has more chronic, under-recognized cerebral conditions, such as cognitive and mood disorders, which also can severely impair patients.
Audience:The book targets a wide audience including medical specialists taking care of persons with diabetes and researchers in the diabetes field. This audience would include endocrinologists, general practitioners, neurologists, psychiatrists, and psychologists taking care of patients with diabetes. Researchers also would find it useful.
Features:This book covers the acute cerebral complications (i.e. hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia, stroke, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) and hyperosmolar hyperglycemic state (HHS)) and the long-term cerebral complications (i.e. depression, cognitive decline) of diabetes in terms of epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment. It also discusses the research being conducted in this field. The book is up to date, targets a broad audience, and is written at a level appropriate for practitioners in different specialties. Unique features of the book are the sections, "Update of Diabetes for Neurologists," and "Update of Stroke and Dementia for Diabetologists," which provide an overview of the topics in a manner most relevant for the targeted audience.
Assessment:This informative resource has alerted me to the increased incidence of often unrecognized complications of diabetes, including depression and cognitive decline. I will use it in my clinical practice to assist in screening and treating my patients with diabetes.
