About the Author

Frank Schmalleger is Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke (UNCP). Schmalleger taught criminal justice courses and chaired the Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Criminal Justice for nearly 20 years while at UNCP. He is the author of more than a dozen textbooks in the justice field.

Description: The topic of deviance, although reprehensible to mainstream society, carries with it a hidden and macabre fascination in the human psyche. This book covers the topic with a specific focus on the ways that globalization has affected deviancy.
Purpose: This second edition is meant to update the literature, societal norms, changing viewpoints, and evolving issues.
Audience: This book is intended for undergraduate students and would be appropriate in a variety of classes related to deviancy, from sociology to psychology to criminology. The authors are well-known and well-published in this area.
Features: There is an almost indescribable quality that makes a book a "textbook" versus a handbook or other type of resource. This book has that classic textbook quality and is organized with students in mind. Learning objectives begin each chapter, along with a story that illustrates the deviance discussed in the chapter. Each chapter has a summary and defines key concepts, as well as plenty of illustrations, graphs, charts, and tables to summarize the information and lighten the tedium of text. Periodic blue boxes highlight additional learning points or examples. Chapters carefully explore different aspects of deviance, including epidemiology, cultural factors, subtypes of the deviant behavior, and characteristics about the offenders and methods. This includes both illegal behaviors and legal but deviant behaviors. The final chapters take an important look at positive deviance, such as extreme sports or Internet addiction, and the potential consequences of these otherwise innocuous behaviors. There are links to both scholarly articles and media reporting for students interested in reading further.
Assessment: From a sociological perspective, this book provides a fascinating look into the broad topic of deviant behavior. It is organized well and readers will find the combination of verbal and visual material easy to consume, which is a critical quality in a book designed for sleep-deprived, distracted undergraduates. Although the previous edition was published in 2005, there are many new references that make this a worthwhile update.
