Overview

Developmental Language Disorders: From Phenotypes to Etiologies is based on the recent conference of the same name sponsored by the Merrill Advanced Studies Center of the University of Kansas. In the past 10 years, considerable advances have taken place in our understanding of genetic and environmental influences on language disorders in children. Significant research in behavioral phenotypes, associated neurocortical processes, and the genetics of language disorders has laid the foundation for further breakthroughs in understanding the reasons for overlapping etiologies, as well as the unique aspects of some phenotypes. Too often the findings are disseminated in a fragmented way because of the discrete diagnostic categories of affectedness. This volume attempts to assimilate and integrate the findings of the transdisciplinary research toward a more coherent picture of behavioral descriptions, brain imaging studies, genetics, and intervention technologies in language impairment. The contributing authors are all scholars with active programs of research funded by the National Institutes of Health involving diverse clinical groups of children with language impairments.

Description: This book details the significant research that has been completed on behavioral phenotypes, associated neurocortical processes, and the genetics of language disorders. It then specifically addresses the phenotypes of language impairments in clinical conditions, including autism, SLI, Down syndrome, fragile X syndrome, and Williams syndrome.
Purpose: The objective is to provide an interdisciplinary view of ongoing research and to describe the advances that have taken place in the understanding of inherited and environmental components of language disorders in children, including behavioral phenotypes, associated neural processes, and the genetics of language disorders. These objectives are worthy for readers in the area of research, specifically in the fields of neuroscience and genetics. This book meets most of the author's objectives.
Audience: According to the author, this book is written for researchers and for those in doctoral programs in cognitive neuroscience, linguistics, communication disorders, psychology, and genetics. In my judgment, this book is more appropriate for those involved in research and in doctoral programs in the areas of cognitive neuroscience and genetics, but not appropriate for those at the undergraduate or master's levels studying communication disorders or speech-language pathology.
Features: This book covers the phenotypes of language impairments; the methodological issues involved in studies that compare different clinical groups, including autism, fragile X syndrome, etc.; and intervention as an experimental means to investigate the phenotypes. This book also discusses brain development and plasticity related to language impairments. The chapters on Down Syndrome and Fragile X Syndrome were well done. One of the shortcomings of the book is in the title, which doesn't give a complete description of what this book is really about.
Assessment: Other books would be more appropriate for those practicing speech-language pathology. Rather than for an interdisciplinary audience, this book is instead more for those involved in neuroscience or genetics research.
