This study on economic development is prerequisite to understand the nature and causes of poverty and backwardness in developing countries. About the Author

Mihir Kumar Pal is a Associate Professor and former Head of the Department of Economics at the Vidyasagar University, Midnapore, West Bengal, India. He stood First in the First Class in both BA(Hons.) and MA(Economics) and was awarded Gold Medals. He obtained M.Phil(Economics) from University of Calcutta and Ph.D. (Economics) from Kalyani University. He has published several articles in reputed national and international journals. He has also presented papers in national and international conferences. Other published books of Dr. Pal are Productivity in the Organised Manufacturing Sector in India (Concept, and Development Alternatives—Theories and Evidence (Allied). Sebak Kumar Jana is currently Reader at the Department of Economics with Rural Development, Vidyasagar University in West Bengal. Dr. Jana after graduating from Presidency College, Kolkata obtained M.Sc. degree in Economics from University of Calcutta, and then obtained M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Economics from Jadavpur University, Kolkata. His area of research includes environmental economics, energy economics, agricultural economics and economics of education. He has published articles in both national and international journals. He is also associated with national and international projects. Sebak Kumar Jana is currently Reader at the Department of Economics with Rural Development, Vidyasagar University in West Bengal.
