About the Author

Pvt Carlton McCarthy, a child of education and proper upbringing, Carlton still saw fit to join the Richmond Howitzers. He would stay with this unit for the duration of the war. He fought through most of the principal battles of the Army of Northern Virginia, and would surrender with them at Appomattox C.H. on April 9th 1865.During one fight, when the artillerists were overwhelmed by Union troops, they dropped their tools and fought as infantrymen. His brother, a Captain was killed at Cold Harbor.
