About the Author

Susan Cummins Miller worked as a field geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and taught geology and oceanography before turning to writing. She is a research affiliate and SIROW Scholar with the University of Arizona’s Southwest Institute for Research on Women, and the editor of A Sweet, Separate Intimacy: Women Writers of the American Frontier, 1800–1922 (TTUP). Hoodoo is her fourth Frankie MacFarlane mystery.

Why did America lose in Vietnam? Former U.S. Intelligence Agency (USIA) assistant director for East Asia, Scotton, who spent much of 1962 through 1975 in Vietnam, addresses that question in this candid and tragicomic memoir. Although the author witnessed and participated in some violent actions, he was not a solider but a USIA officer who practiced public diplomacy mostly in rural Vietnam. Unusual for his position, Scotton was highly involved in the creation of citizen defense units in provincial hamlets. He describes many problems that contributed to defeat, such as interagency conflict and poor coordination between the United States and South Vietnam. However, Scotton convincingly argues that only the communist forces truly understood the multidimensional (military, political, etc.) nature of the war, and were thus successful. Through his book, readers will gain knowledge of exactly what happens on the ground when America engages in nation building, though the frequent use of government acronyms and Vietnamese terms can be challenging for the unversed (an appendix helps).
