About the Author

An international authority on dermatology and dermatologic surgery, Jonathan Kantor is editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology International, the author/ editor of three textbooks published by McGraw-Hill, and the author of over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters.

Dr Kantor is with the Department of Dermatology, Center for Global Health, and Center for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, and is a recipient of both the Presidential Citation Award and the Member Making a Difference Award from the American Academy of Dermatology.

Born in South Africa and educated in six countries on four continents, Dr Kantor’s work has been the subject of editorials in every major dermatology journal. He has been associate editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology and of Dialogues in Dermatology, and sat on the Mohs surgery AUC ratings panel for the American Academy of Dermatology and the Reconstruction after Skin Cancer Resection Committee for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Description: Beginning and expert dermatological surgeons alike will learn techniques and tips for sharpening their surgical skills by studying this encyclopedia on dermatologic surgery. There are hundreds of online videos and color clinical photographs illustrating the techniques.
Purpose: The purpose is to teach dermatologists how to perform surgical procedures competently.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists.
Features: In 1,360 pages, this book comprehensively covers from how to evaluate patients and obtain informed consent correctly to basic suturing techniques, mastering the concepts of tissue movement, and planning complex closures in meticulous detail. Precautions are summarized in shaded boxes and suggestions for what to include in patient instructions are provided. The book provides a website where users can download videos illustrating various surgical procedures. I had to try several times before I was successful in doing this. You must provide your email address to receive a link for downloading the videos, but I did not receive an email the first few times. The videos are for the most part educational and well done, but the quality varies. Some of the videos are accompanied by narration, which adds to the teaching value. Others have extraneous noise; one can hear music in the background and chitchat between the surgeon, his medical assistant, and the patient. It would be more valuable to have the surgeon discuss the how and why of placement of sutures, planning of the flaps, how the tissue movement was taken into consideration for planning the specific closure being shown versus discussing his dental appointment and joking with the patient. Other videos are completely silent and may or may not be accompanied by a short caption mentioning the type of suture used.
Assessment: Overall, this is an excellent surgical book for dermatology residents and dermatologists in practice to brush up on old and new techniques. The experts have spoken; we should listen and learn.
