Overview

In Ancient Rome, on the morning of his ninth birthday, young Martial Portius races against time to find his older brother Hershal. Unless Martial can deliver an important message to him, the forgetful Hershal will likely lose his job as a Roman courier. As Martial anxiously searches the crowded streets, he learns a good deal about the people, places, and customs of his native city.

Moreover Martial, the son of a poor artisan, comes to understand the value of education as an important first step in his and Hershal's dreams of a better life.

Author Getzinger and Terence Aselford skillfully take young listeners to ancient Rome, where they meet two young brothers. As Martial journeys through the Roman streets to give Hershal, his courier brother, something he left behind, he sees the Colosseum, the Forum, and other famous sights. Sharing his observations, listeners learn many valuable lessons about this fascinating time and place. Aselford's matter-of-fact delivery conveys a great deal of information in an easy-to-understand manner. This splendid series will interest all ages. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine
