About the Author

Manish Suneja, MD, FASN, FACP is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics where he serves as the Program Director of Internal Medicine Residency Program, Vice Chair of Education and the Strand Director for Clinical and Professional skills (CAPS) curricular strand at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Dr. Suneja has a very keen interest in teaching clinical reasoning to both medical students and residents. Dr. Suneja has authored numerous scientific and educational publications. He has received numerous teaching awards and honors from medical students, residents and peers and is nationally recognized for his expertise in clinical and diagnostic reasoning.

Joseph Szot, MD, FACP is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics where he serves as the associate dean and Medical Director of Continuing Medical Education.

Donald Brown, MD MACP is Professor of Medicine at the University of Iowa. He is nationally known for his teaching abilities at Iowa.

Description: This is an update of a book last published in 2009 on performing an appropriate physical examination.
Purpose: The purpose is to describe how to approach a patient, obtain a relevant set of historical facts concerning their symptoms and past medical history, and perform either a general physical examination or a focused examination, depending upon the situation.
Audience: This book is clearly intended for novice clinicians and students in training. In reality, many experienced clinicians could use this as a refresher after years in practice when some of the finer points of diagnosis could be forgotten.
Features: This edition has a number of enhancements that make it worthwhile. In particular, a new feature, "Clinical Occurrence," which makes suggestions regarding the differential diagnosis of a particular symptom or sign, appears throughout. This is a nice addition as clinicians tend to associate a sign with one diagnosis and this suggests other possible diagnoses. There are also more references to the evidence supporting or disavowing a sign to be helpful in the differential diagnoses. Many physical signs have been taken as pathognomonic of a diagnosis and this feature helps differentiate the truth or usefulness of those beliefs. There is also a new section introducing the use of ultrasound as a bedside diagnostic technique. The previous edition offered a full-text download to a mobile device. While this appears to continue to be available, the ability to download the 10th edition to a portable device is not discussed. There is a website listed in the preface offering a full-text ebook, but I could not find the ebook, just an advertisement for the print version.
Assessment: There are significant enhancements in this edition of this well-established physical diagnosis book that make it worth buying. However, the downloadable version would be very important to younger clinicians who wish to quickly review the diagnostic techniques prior to seeing a particular patient.
