Overview

Defying Gravity creates, in loving detail, life in small town northern Indiana of the 1950s. The hero, an exuberant thirteen-year-old, has worries about The Bomb -- but likes to blow things up with his chemistry set. Except for the physical adversities he must contend with, his horizons are rapidly expanding. Then, out of the blue, a sinister plot comes to light. His day-to-day life is turned upside down. The kids' games, the mischief in the alley, suddenly hold no meaning. Everything has changed and, for better or worse, there's no going back.

About the Author

Walter Ward is a native of South Bend, Indiana. Life was hard when he was a kid but his dad gave him a secret weapon, a simple phrase which made all the difference, "There's no such word as 'can't.'" Believing that, he earned a degree from Purdue University which led to a teaching career of over three decades. Walt ad his wife, Jane, designed and built their home, a snug retreat nestled in the woods of Southwestern Michigan. His life is one of learning and doing. When asked about Defying Gravity he says, "How many of us ever get the chance to tell our story?"
