Deep in the Desert

When the sun goes down, the animals of the Sonoran Desert come out into the night in a place unlike any other in the world. The inhabitants of the desert are on the move under a starlit sky, as the air cools and they venture out of their daytime shelters. Crisp, bold, collage illustrations bring the simple text and rhythmic refrain to life, inviting young readers to join in the chant and meet the creatures and plants that live in this unique habitat. The night passes and the sun rises again on another day in the desert. Information about the Sonoran Desert, and each of the animals and plants depicted, follow the story, and remind readers that people also live in the desert. Redesigned and revised in 2023.

About the Author

Karen McCarthy Eger explored environmental education and children's theater before landing a children's librarian job, which led to a forty year stint in public libraries in New Hampshire and Maine. Deep in the Desert began when a search for desert books for very young children turned up none. Her interest in deserts stems from a season of living in Canyonlands National Park while volunteering. She lives with her husband on a pond in the woods, and swims as often as the weather in Maine allows.

Marie Lejeune was first drawn to children's books through art. She received a bachelor's degree in English, and a master's degree in art history, taking both these passions first to a bookstore and then to public libraries. As Head Children's Librarian, her artwork for summer reading programs is legendary, and transforms the youth services department at the Rochester Public Library in New Hampshire, where she is now Library Director. She gardens with the same enthusiasm that she brings to books, children and building community.
