Overview

After Hessius Mann was convicted of his wife's murder, suppressed evidence came to light and the verdict was overturned-too bad he was already executed. But thanks to the miracles of modern science, Hessius was brought back to life. Sort of.

Now that he's joined the ranks of Fort Hammer's pulse-challenged population, Hessius attempts to make a "living" as a private investigator. But when a missing persons case leads to a few zombies cut to pieces, Hessius starts thinking that someone's giving him the run-around-and it's not like he's in any condition to make a quick getaway . . .

Editorial Reviews

The good news: Hessius Mann was cleared of murdering his wife. The bad news: He had already been executed. As a newly undead private investigator, he tackles his first major case, a mysterious disappearance that quickly becomes linked to several dismembered zombies. The launch of a promising new sci-fi series. A mass market and NOOK Book original.

Publishers Weekly

Petrucha gets Hessius Mann, zombie PI, off to a promising start in this tale of murder and the undead. Mann was a police detective in the U.S. city of Fort Hammer until someone killed his wife and set him up to take the fall. After being executed for the murder, he’s belatedly exonerated and brought back from the dead as a well-preserved “chak” who can almost pass as a “liveblood.” Despite holes in his memory, Mann sets up shop as a gumshoe and is drawn into a complex serial killer case when he’s hired to locate a lower-functioning zombie who is heir to a large fortune. Petrucha successfully portrays the walking dead as more than mindless, flesh-eating killing machines, thanks to careful details of zombie life, culture, and slang. (Oct.)
