Overview

When Mike Anthony's consulting career in corporate America throws him into a tailspin and the world seems to flip inside out, he stays adrift by becoming a nursing assistant in a local nursing home. He reinvents himself to find happiness without a big income, a partner, or material possessions. Running rejuvenates Mike and becomes his passion. With the newfound support of a witty nursing home resident named Burt, his friend Sanchez, and the inspiration of a world-class Kenyan runner, Moses Kimani, Mike prepares himself for the biggest challenge of his life and sets out to defeat the last demon that haunts him. Moses Kimani, a former world champion marathon runner, is now the coach of the Kenyan national team. Two noteworthy runners are on the Kenyan team. Fonte Bitok is team captain, gifted with extraordinary physical talent but also an arrogant and narcissistic nature. Joseph Kipchumba is the newest addition to the team and the youngest, eager to earn the respect of his teammates as the Kenyan team embarks on a worldwide tour of the major marathon circuit. On a spring day in Cleveland Ohio, these storylines intersect when Mike Anthony and Joseph Kipchumba each set out to face the biggest challenge of his life. Will their courage, stamina, and determination be enough? Will the day bring each man the redemption he desperately seeks, or end far differently than either could have imagined? Will one of them need a hero to come to the rescue?

About the Author

A life-long resident of northeast Ohio, I am retired from the Cleveland Clinic and currently enjoying a
second career with SummaHealth in Akron.

From 1984 to 1992 I was a punter and placekicker with the semi-pro Cleveland Falcons football team.
The Falcons were consistently ranked in the national “Top Twenty”. I was all-league or runner-up every
year I played with the Falcons.

After being out of football for a few years, I was looking for a new sport and discovered running. I added
cycling and soon was participating in duathlons in Ohio, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania and Canada,
consistently winning or ranking in the top three of my age group. Highlights of my duathlon experience
included winning the sprint distance race in the Bulldog Duathlon in 2004, finishing third overall in the
Great Lakes Escape Olympic distance duathlon in 2003 and third overall in the North Coast Nautilus
sprint duathlon in 2003.

My single attempt at running a marathon distance race did not go well, which was the inspiration for
writing the book. The story is not entirely autobiographical, but I did have the protagonist experience a
bit of what has happened to me on and off the racecourse
