In this historic epic, the kickoff to a new series, Bahira, daughter of a wealthy family from Cartegin, has a problem: she and her younger brother Berran have been kidnapped and beaten by the fearsome Urudu, or raiders, of ancient Sumer. After escaping their lusty clutches on the pirate ship Taradium, Bahira finds herself trapped as the Urudu’s slave, separated from her family and sent to work in their high camps. Just a year earlier, Areoch, the adopted son of Sargon the Great, finds himself in Bahira’s household following an attack by a legendary Umu, akin to a saber-toothed tiger. There he falls in love with Bahira, but too late realizes that she comes from an enemy household. Following her kidnapping, Areoch teams up with her father’s army to save Bahira from the Urudu, but along the way must face threats that will challenge everything Areoch thought he knew about himself and his world.

Readers fascinated by Mesopotamia will be impressed with Burns’s fiction debut. Replete with beautiful hand-drawn illustrations and archaeological images, the novel firmly roots its audience in the world of ancient Sumer. Burns has clearly done his research, though at times his attention to detail comes at the expense of plot clarity or narrative momentum. Though the novel is listed as middle-grade fiction, the prose is more adult than its peers, such as The Bartimaeus Trilogy–think more Lord of the Rings than The Hobbit, as it’s densely written and plotted, attentive to historic detail, and not crafted for casual reading.

Parents should also note content that might not be suitable for more sensitive readers, including the passing references to orgies, murder, and graphic depictions of battle found in the prologue alone. Fans of history and epic adventures will find much to love in this saga, however, and can look forward to several more entries planned in the Bloodline of Kings series.

Takeaway: History-loving adventure fans will be engrossed by Burns’s Sumerian-inspired epic.
