He was born in Liverpool in 1954 and has had a wide range of experiences, from work in fairgrounds, factories and oil refineries to the Civil Service and, finally, Headship of the secondary school for Toxteth, Liverpool. He has had a long involvement with political processes on a regional and national level. He has travelled widely and worked extensively both in Britain and in the Middle East. He was an advisor to Tony Blair as the head of a school succeeding in challenging circumstances. He published his educational experiences as ‘Extreme Headship… a case study in educational leadership and school improvement.’ (2005, Trafford ISBN 1-4120 5586-5). The book has since been adopted on Masters Programmes in dozens of British and American universities. He is a published travel writer, essayist and poet. His work has featured on BBC radio. He is the author of ‘Deep State’, a political thriller. He is a Director of CQEC, a community based management, research and development organisation.
