Dark Roasted Murder
Dani Brennen's world has been rocked by the death of her mentor, friend, and father figure Harry Coffee. Harry had changed Dani's world. He took Dani under his wing, treated her like his own, loved her and taught her his business. Coffee's Roasted Bean, affectionately known as "The Bean," began in an abandoned firehouse and grew to a regionally recognized, award-winning coffee roaster and coffee house. Dani helped Harry steer the company as she built her life from a homeless and troubled young butch living in the back of her Buick Regal, to the loving, quiet, intelligent, and handsome butch woman she became.
Dani holds the future of The Bean in her hands now. But Harry's only child, Kyle, is bitterly angry. He hates Dani for who she is – for everything she is! She's everything he isn't. And Kyle hates that she got any part of his father's estate. Kyle has his own ideas about the future of The Bean now that daddy is gone, and he won't be happy until everything is his alone - his to destroy. Enter Jac Cho, Harry's long-time attorney, who joins Dani to wage a fierce battle, to keep The Bean in Dani's capable hands.
In the midst of Dani's struggle for The Bean, a ghost from Dani's past appears complicating her world. Ronnie shows up at the McGee apartments, looking to make a new start. Ronnie is fresh out of Rise, the battered women's shelter, and was sent to live at the McGee, transitional housing Dani runs for women moving out of Rise. Dani runs hte McGee with the previous owner Babs, a cantankerous and self proclaimed old-school dyke. Ronnie needs to put her painful history with Dani to rest. But Dani's former life is very private, having caused Dani a great deal of pain, both physical and emotional. But, Ronnie doesn't have much time to make amends for the harm she caused, and breaking through to Dani may take longer than she has.
Dani, Jac, and Ronnie each fight to overcome their personal pasts, Kyle's violence, tragedy, each hoping to emerge whole.
