About the Author

A military brat, Evan Hughes was raised in two countries –Germany and the United States. He has studied at schools in two different countries and 4 different states, including three different colleges - Monterey Peninsula College, San Francisco State University, and graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Physics from Pitzer College in California. He has tutored in California and Georgia, for several different tutoring companies. In California, he worked primarily with students in the No Child Left Behind program. He has worked with students in group and private situations, though he prefers private one-on-one tutoring as I can better address the student's individual needs.
Evan loves teaching. He finds the moment the student has an epiphany, and he gets to see that light bulb go off as they finally get something with which they were struggling, extremely rewarding. The method he utilizes is one to help the student gain an understanding of the why of things, not just the how or what. He finds this allows the student to apply their knowledge to a larger variety of problems, and arms them to tackle tougher challenges than a traditional "it's just how it is" approach.
Evan looks for alternative ways to approach mathematics - ways to handle it more simply, and more concretely, than it is typically taught. He uses more visual mnemonics and tries to make math relatable so the student will better grasp and retain the information. If a concept can be related simply, in a manner that makes it more tangible to the student, the lesson will remain with that student longer, and they will be better able to use it in more situations.
