About the Author

Dori Elys both writes and edits children’s books. She lives in New York City with her furry best friend.

Alicia Más is an illustrator and graphic designer raised in Spain’s palm tree city, Elche. She is the illustrator of the Every Day Together series, written by Isabel Otter, and the board book Día de Muertos. Animated films, music, and children’s books are amongst Alicia’s biggest artistic and emotional inspirations.

Latinx-cued characters invite readers to celebrate Día de Muertos in Elys’s sweetly rendered lift-the-flap board book, educating readers on what the holiday means and how to celebrate it: “Swirl over to the altar,/ a showcase of love./ It’s how we remember/ those who’ve passed on.” The text next introduces symbols including animal guides, candles, and skulls, before highlighting the importance of “music, laughter, joy, food” alongside remembrance of those who have passed. Màs’s art style is welcoming and warm—soft-edged characters are detailed with smiling faces and a friendly aura. Flaps designed to resemble papel picado reveal facts about the holiday (“Día de Muertos is celebrated from November 1 to November 2 every year!”), adding an interactive element to this simple but charming overview that wishes readers a concluding “Feliz Día de Muertos from me to you!” All ages.
