This book is an attempt to describe, in regard to both current information as well as potential research, the role of cytokines in animal health and disease. The purpose is to review and provide a necessary resource of information regarding cytokine biology in domestic animals. Though most information regarding the role of cytokines is restricted to study in humans and rodents, this book helps to establish a foundation for future research. Generally speaking, the authors clearly meet their objectives as stated in the preface. This book is well written, well organized, concise, and has the ability to reach a wide audience. Professionals in veterinary medicine, specifically clinicians and research specialists, should benefit greatly from the information. Each chapter is extremely well referenced and the contributors are credible from both a clinical and research perspective. The occasional tables, graphs, charts, and other illustrations help to support and demonstrate the written material. The strength of this book is in the focus on the role of cytokines in domestic and companion animals versus human and rodent model systems. Thus, material is current, relevant, and markedly referenced. The table of contents is well organized and categorized and easily followed. In general, this book provides useful and necessary information regarding cytokine biology and potential in animal medicine. Those professionals in veterinary medicine who wish to use this book as a reference source should find the content valuable. I strongly advise libraries and reference facilities to carry a copy. Clinicians in need of specific reference material and research specialists would greatly benefit from ownership.
