Cut, Crop & Die
THE DEATH OF A RIVAL CRAFTER IS NOTHING TO SNEEZE ABOUT . . . KIKI'S LEFT CRYING THE BLUES

In front of a meeting room full of customers and merchants, Kiki watches helplessly as a rival crafter takes one bite of a scone and goes into anaphylactic shock. Suddenly all eyes turn to Kiki Lowenstein, who was Dead Woman's archenemy.

Just that fast, Kiki's moment of triumph turns into a disaster.

Just when Kiki was settling into her new job, her first real career, she's become the poster child for dead customers. But Kiki's life isn't all doom and gloom. On the bright side, her mother-in-law has invited her to a gala event. A spa day is in order . . . and that doesn't go as planned either.

In fact, Kiki's heart is about to smashed into a zillion tiny piece. That dead woman was the least of poor Kiki's problems.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Broad humor bordering on the absurd propels Agatha-finalist Slan's uneven second mystery to feature St. Louis scrapbooker Kiki Lowenstein (after 2008's Paper, Scissors, Death). When one of Kiki's fellow scrappers, Yvonne Gaynor, keels over during a cropping event because of a severe allergic reaction, the police suspect someone sabotaged the epinephrine syringe Yvonne always carried for such an emergency. Despite all warnings, Kiki decides to launch her own murder investigation, which is soon complicated by hate crime attacks against Kiki's employer and other local Jews. On the bright side, three handsome men take an interest in Kiki, while her late husband's mother, Sheila, interferes in her life to her benefit. Filled with scrapbooking lore, this relatively clean cozy contains scenes that will make you either laugh or cringe, like Sheila's sticking penis-shaped vibrators into her lawn to get rid of her mole problem. Kirkus Reviews

A professional scrapbooker revs up her love life and solves a murder. Kiki Lowenstein barely escaped death in her first adventure (Paper, Scissors, Death, 2008). Now her life is calmer. Her friendship with Detective Detweiler is leaning toward the romantic; she loves her job at the scrapbooking supply store Time in a Bottle; and her formerly censorious mother-in-law Sheila is making nice. The only fly in the ointment is her beloved daughter Anya, who's sinking into teen moodiness. Life goes downhill fast when Kiki's rival Yvonne Gaynor goes into anaphylactic shock and dies at a scrapbooking event Kiki and her boss Dodie Goldfader arranged. The police find that Yvonne's scone was doctored with aspirin and her Epi-Pen was mysteriously empty. When Dodie reports nasty phone calls and anti-Semitic attacks on her store, Kiki resolves to investigate despite Detweiler's disapproval. Meanwhile, Sheila treats Kiki to a day at a spa and a fabulous outfit to wear at a party. But her joy turns to despair when she meets Detweiler there with the wife he's supposed to have divorced. With help from the hunky brother of her pal Mert, who's just out of jail, Kiki starts digging into Yvonne's life and soon turns up some nasty secrets that may have led to her death. Kiki's second outing is a nicely crafted cozy full of amusing moments, real-life insecurities and scrapbooking tips.
