Description: This is the 14th edition of a classic, succinctly organized, easy-to-follow, summary-format book that traces its inception back to Dunphy and Way's Current Surgical Diagnosis and Treatment. A complete update of the 2010 edition, it is carefully edited and well written, containing nicely highlighted points for each topic. Several new chapters and many new features have been added. The reading experience is painless and high-yield.
Purpose: The book is intended to serve as a "ready source of information about diseases managed by surgeons." It delivers exactly what it promises: it is indeed a ready source of key information about diseases managed by surgeons. For this reason, it is a needed and worthy book.
Audience: The book is designed to be an easy and quick reference, with credible source references. For this reason, it will be useful to many, including students and residents, general practitioners, and practicing surgeons preparing to recertify.
Features: The book does a great job of succinctly covering key topics in general surgery. For each topic, it presents main points about a disease process along with diagnosis and treatment. It is not intended to serve as a surgical atlas, and trainees will want to consult this book in conjunction with an atlas. It is, rather, an excellent and concise source of information about surgical disease and the related conditions treated by surgeons (that is, conditions encountered in surgical patients). The best feature of the book is its organization. Key points are nicely displayed and easy to identify. The consistency of organization is carried throughout the book regardless of topic. Illustrations are selectively offered as needed to better highlight the meaty points of discussion. Multiple choice questions have been added to this edition, enhancing its value to trainees.
Assessment: This is a must-have for surgical students and residents, as well as general surgery practitioners. It is well written and well organized, making it easy to follow and reference. Despite its relatively small size, it is robust in information. It is a worthy update of a classic, used and beloved by generations of residents.
