Esta comedia en cinco actos, en prosa y verso, de William Shakespeare fue escrita probablemente en 1611, representada en aquel mismo año y publicada en el infolio de 1623. Su fuente principal es la novela Pandosto o el triunfo del tiempo de Robert Greene (1558-1592), reimpresa (1607) con el título de Dorasto y Faunia. El episodio de la estatua viviente le pudo muy bien ser sugerido por la Mujer en la Luna de John Lyly (1554-1606), o por las Metamorfosis de la imagen de Pigmalión (1598), de John Marston (1575-1634). Algunos nombres de personajes están tomados de la Arcadia de sir Philip Sidney (1554-1586). El título, Cuento de Invierno, es sinónimo de cosa a propósito para contarse alrededor del fuego; género de cuento en el que toman parte los espíritus, los cumplimientos de antiguas profecías o la fuerza del destino.

Dubbed "The Bard of Avon," Shakespeare oversaw the building of the Globe Theatre in London, where a number of his plays were staged, the best-known of which include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth. The First Folio, a printed book of 36 of his comedies, tragedies, and history plays, was published in 1623.
