Overview

Sherwood Smith's most popular young adult fantasy begins with Meliara and her brother vowing to free Remalna from an evil king. War is tougher than it seemed. When Meliara is caught by the enemy commander, the elegant Marquis of Shevraeth, it's escape or die.

Afterward, Meliara faces a tougher challenge: the battlefield is no longer mud and steel, but palaces, the weapons manners and fans. Toughest of all is courtship, when the one who catches her heart is her personal enemy—the new king.

This beloved romantic fantasy has been in continuous print for over twenty years. The definitive edition is corrected, with additional material in six much-requested inserts from the hero's point of view.

Nominated for ALA/YASLA Best Books for Young Adults, on the ALA/YASLA Quick Pick List for Reluctant Young Adult Readers, and named one of NY Public Library Best Books for Teens,. Finalist, Soaring Eagle Award (Kids 12-18 voting, Wyoming Library System

About the Author

Sherwood Smith has been trying to trade biographies with someone rich, gorgeous, and charismatic, but until then has to stick with the, uh, less glamorous truth: she studied in Europe before earning a masters in history, afterward working as a governess, a bartender, and an electrical supply verifier—not all at the same time—until she capped quotations of "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock" by a screenwriter, who promptly offered her a job. She wore various hats in the film industry before she turned to writing books.
