Read an Excerpt

Activity toys are very important for a child’s development and young learners pick up new skills so quickly.

Because of this, when designing toys I try to turn closed-end toys (which only help develop specific skills) into more open-ended toys (which can be played with in several different ways). The Monkey Shape Sorter, Elephant Stacking Toy, and Giraffe Threading Toy—along with other toys in this pattern book—can all be used for a long time, not only for learning a particular skill but also for developing further skills over time. And even as the child grows older, they will become treasured members of a soft toy collection.

Even the closed-end toys, such as the Sea Life and Dinosaurs Quiet Books and the Farmyard Activity Cube, will appeal to both children and adults—play with them together and invent your own stories as you use them!

Crocheted toys are soft and safe for use by children of any age, and to create them you only need yarn, polyester stuffing, a crochet hook, and a needle. All the patterns use basic crochet stitches, so there are no complicated new stitches or techniques to learn—and even if you don’t know any of them, it will be easy to learn them. So, let’s get started making cute educational toys.
Have fun crocheting and enjoy playing!
