About the Author

John S. Russ was born in Huntsville, Alabama. ?He grew up with a natural love for nature and animals.?He left Alabama to join the Marine Corps in 1966.

After a stint in Vietnam he was transferred to El Toro Marine Air Base, and returned to civilian life in 1970. ?He settled in California where he volunteered for three years at the Wildlife Waystation, nestled in the Angeles National Forest, and later at The Los Angeles Zoo for two more years.

In 2008, he came home to Alabama and shortly after met his wife April, also a naturalist at heart. Together they became involved in rescuing the local indigenous wildlife. John and April founded Shamballa Wildlife Rescue in 2013 on their small mountain farm in the North Alabama woods.

This is John’s first full-fledged attempt at authorship, although his work as a writer and editor has been featured in several other publications. When he’s not reading or writing, he can be found in the barn with his new best friend, “Humphrey,” a one-year-old mini-donkey.
