Purpose: This is a board review tool that is intended to support anesthesiologists, surgeons, intensivists, and neurologists preparing for standard examinations in critical care.
Audience: Senior trainees and clinicians readying themselves for standardized examinations in the various critical care disciplines are the audience. The authors include trainees at multiple levels, junior faculty members, and senior providers. A surprising number of contributors are from departments of anesthesiology and perioperative care.
Features: The book is organized by organ system with concluding topics of administration, ethics, and research principles. Initial organ system question groups feature neurological disorders, cardiopulmonary disease, nephrology, endocrinology, hematology, and infectious problems. A small number of chapters describes surgery and trauma concerns along with a small number of transplantation questions. Pharmacology questions include a review of toxins, drug overdose, addiction, and psychoactive medications. Perhaps the most important collection of questions come in an appendix labeled "Grab Bag." This question set best approximates a critical care exam in that it is a mix of questions related to various problems. A typical chapter has a small number of questions, typically fewer than 10, in multiple-choice format based on clinical scenarios. The conclusion of the chapter provides an answer to each question, incorporating several paragraphs and one to three references. References reflect primary literature and date to within two years of publication of this book. Tables are occasionally used to summarize important data and scoring systems. Occasionally, there are reproduction of radiographs. The table of contents groups chapters according to organ system while a detailed subject index includes separate citations for tables.
Assessment: This book can be recommended for its clarity of presentation and the breadth of topics. many authors coming from an anesthesiology background, topics in neurology and surgical critical care receive less emphasis than they might in other publications. In all, this is one more tool for subject review.
