Purpose: According to the author, the book is designed to serve three purposes: to alert mental health professionals to theoretical and practical issues in crisis intervention and trauma counseling; to be a resource for both neophytes and seasoned professionals; to draw attention to the experience of those in crisis, especially in the aftermath of large scale tragedies such as 9-11. These are very worthy objectives that the book meets.
Audience: According to the author, the target audience is psychologists, social workers, and therapists, as well as practitioners in allied professional fields such as nursing, criminal justice, pastoral care, and education. I agree that the book is applicable to a wide range of individuals in many of the helping professions. The author is a credible authority in the field.
Features: The book covers theory and practice, especially concerned with new approaches which are evidence-based. Topics include PTSD, patient suicide and violence, workplace and school violence, and death and dying. The book also addresses helping therapists deal with burnout. The book is good because it covers a wide spectrum of crisis situations. It is very practical and gives helpful insights.
Assessment: This book addresses many important topics in a very readable fashion supported by recent research studies. I especially liked the chapters on patient suicide and violence because both myths and truths are discussed. This is knowledge that all clinicians should have. All in all, this is an excellent book that won't disappoint.
