Homicide Detective Sean Forrest is puzzled why he is awakened from his first, good night's sleep in a week to respond to a bank alarm. His confusion is quickly cleared when he finds a body was left behind. He recognizes the dead man as a convicted felon who is supposed to be in prison, but he cannot verify the man's identity because his finger prints are not in the police database. The dead felon's presence leads Detective Forrest to suspect the man's prison warden of illegal activity, and this suspicion leads to him and his family being targeted. His investigation into the dead felon and his warden takes many twists and turns as people he is convinced are suspects are eliminated, including the warden himself, or are found dead. It also leads him to learn that someone is working from within the police department, and now Detective Forrest must solve the murder of the felon and identify who within the police department is aiding in criminal activity.
