Overview

Maggie Bennett is a devoted and well-seasoned ER nurse. She works in a hectic and overcrowded level one trauma center at Saint Vincent's Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Although the work is constantly demanding, she gives everything she has to the patients in her care.

One night, while working overtime on the night shift to cover a nursing shortage, Maggie returns from a meal break to find her homeless, unidentified patient is dead, having died of a massive hemorrhage from his arterial line. Worse than that, Homicide Detective Hanes, who happened to be on the scene working on another homicide, is there to greet her. He has decided she is the number one suspect. Will he charge her with murder?

With her reputation and liberty on the line, Maggie is determined to uncover who killed her patient. But with the tenacious Detective Hanes merely a step behind her, there is no room for error.

A week later, when she discovers her patient's body still in the morgue and unidentified, she realizes that discovering who they are is crucial to her case.

But the deeper Maggie digs, the more immersed she becomes in a game of cat and mouse with a serial killer who is prepared to do anything it takes to silence her. As people close to her start dying, she is suddenly confronted with the reality of her situation.

Can she solve the murder and clear her name before she loses her career and her new love interest, a billionaire from Wall Street? Or is he the killer who wants to take all she cherishes, including her life?

Marilyn Benner Sowyak is a practicing Register Nurse who has worked in the Emergency Departments of New York City's Bellevue Hospital, Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York Hospital Cornell, and Saint Vincent's Hospital, Orlando Regional Medical Center, and Carolinas Medical Center Main in Charlotte, North Carolina.

This book starts with a true-life snippet. I was standing at the nurse's station when a nurse friend approached me and asked if I heard what happened in the ICU last night. I said no. And she said, "Well. A patient bled to death while the nurse was on break, and homicide might charge her with murder. " I never knew the end of the story, but it was so horrifying I decided to write a novel about it - because it was every nurse's nightmare to have harm come to a patient entrusted to their care. Many of the other medical situations are true - from my almost five decades-long ER Nursing career.

"Nursing is a significant part of me, and I can't give it up. It is where real life happens. After work, I crawl into the world of healing by writing and creating an imaginary world with imaginary people."
