About the Author

Johnnie Christmas is a #1 New York Times Bestselling graphic novelist. Writer of the Image Comics sci-fi series TARTARUS and CREMA, a haunted romance published by Comixology Originals. His book FIREBUG, received a starred review from Publisher's Weekly and earned him a Joe Shuster Outstanding Cartoonist nomination. He's perhaps best known for co-creating the series ANGEL CATBIRD with celebrated writer Margaret Atwood and adapting William Gibson's lost screenplay for ALIEN 3 into a critically acclaimed graphic novel of the same name. His credits also include co-creating the pre-apocalyptic thriller SHELTERED. A graduate of the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, earning a BFA in Communication Design/Illustration.

Esme has always been afraid that she might disappear into the dark. To stave off sleep and darkness, the barista started drinking copious amounts of coffee—and discovered something strange. When Esme has caffeine in her system, she can see ghosts; when she has enough caffeine, everyone around her can start to see them too. With the emergence of a sinister ghost, a decades-old love triangle rises from the grave to complicate Esme's already complicated courtship of the beautiful Brazilian heiress who will soon be selling the chain of coffee shops where Esme works. Identities shift and secrets are revealed through expressive, understated art by Brazilian Luiz (Prism Award—nominated for Figurinha) that is by turns gorgeous and grotesque. VERDICT While Christmas's (Tartarus) narrative and character development could have used more page-space to breathe, this paranormal lesbian romance (a digital graphic novel that's collected here in print for the first time) is nevertheless a promising choice for libraries with a strong graphic novel readership.
