Overview

Cowbilly George and the Greased Pig is the second story in a series of early-reader children’s books featuring a five year old boy from the hills.

The day George had waited so long for was finally here. George and his family go to the Houston Days Festival where wagon rides and pie contest start off the day. After the longest wait, George takes part in a greased pig contest. Knocked down at the start, George pulls his hat down tight and proves that you that you can’t keep a real Cowbilly down.

Muddy and greasy, George learns a little about patience and sportsmanship while feeling the love and support of his family along the way.

About the Author

As F.S. Haltom grew, he certainly wasn’t destined to flourish in the academic world. The youngest of six children and the only boy he was much more at home with outdoor and physical activities. In elementary school he was singled out for a remedial reading course by the second grade. His participation was suspect and he truly couldn’t identify with the written word. His mother was dedicated and worked to keep him on task, but he was satisfied with the minimum of academic accomplishments. This track record continued through his junior year when he attended trade school.

After graduation from high school he enlisted in the United States Navy as an Aviation Electronics Technician. He advanced quickly to the rank of E-5, Second Class Petty Officer and was selected to teach an electronics system course. He attended and graduated from United States Naval Instructor’s Training in May 1988. While instructing for Naval Air Maintenance Training Detachment he realized his passion for teaching and began taking courses at Grossmont Community College in San Diego, California.

Upon his Honorable Discharge in May of 1991 he began employment with San Diego State University teaching water sports through the Mission Bay Aquatic Center. He taught Physical Education courses for SDSU and University San Diego as well as recreation courses for University of California San Diego. It was the camp for kids, courses during the summers, that made him realize his passion to teach elementary age children. At that point he geared his studies toward elementary education and enrolled at Point Loma Nazarene College.

Leaving the teaching profession several years later to pursue other endeavors, F.S.’ passion to teach children never faltered and he began to write the “Cowbilly George” series. Hoping to help early readers discover a relevant character that is able to find a place for himself in this world, through perseverance, a positive attitude and a loving family.

F. S. Haltom hopes that every book in the Cowbilly George series inspires early readers to discover who they are while enjoying the adventures of a boy who is very lucky to be so unique.
