Overview

As a girl and as part of an ethnic minority in Afghanistan, Freshta Tori Jan was persecuted relentlessly. Her family faced kidnappings and daily murder attempts on the bus, on the way to school, in the workplace, and beyond. Freshta's school was shut down by the Taliban, and many of her friends were murdered and shot. Her journey through poverty, terrorism, and other forms of injustice has enabled her to be a voice for those unable to share their stories and those unable to receive the opportunities she has sought. She believes in empowering youth in order to bring about change and to be the leaders of today and tomorrow. With a voice that is both accessible and engaging, Freshta brings forward a captivating first-person account of strength, resilience, and determination, delivering compelling narrative nonfiction by young people, for young people.

Editorial Reviews

MARCH 2022 - AudioFile

Narrator Dalia Ramahi takes listeners through the harrowing journey of an ethnic minority girl in Afghanistan who experiences unimaginable trauma before coming to safety in the U.S. Ramahi’s youthful, accessible voice expresses the range of Freshta’s emotions—from tired resignation at the racism she experienced at school to the terror and pain of witnessing the genocide of her race while fearing that her own family will be killed next. But there is hope in this story, too, as listeners hear Freshta’s joy at wearing American clothes for the first time and her amazement at having her own desk and chair at school. Ramahi infuses Freshta’s voice with relatable sincerity and optimism that will resonate with young people. S.C. © AudioFile 2022, Portland, Maine
