Overview

This book is the life story of Enid Haney Barber. She writes of growing up as the daughter of Arkansas sharecroppers, seeking more education in nursing school in Memphis, and meeting and marrying Orvel Barber. She put her educational goals on hold during and after World War II until she and her family settled in New Johnsonville, TN in 1950. She tells of her pursuit of a bachelor's degree and a teaching job. She went on to earn two post-graduate degrees and to serve 42 years in education. She was a teacher, a counselor, a principal, supervisor of education and finally ended her career as Director of Schools. After retirement, she wrote her autobiography and worked diligently to support the 21st Century Scholarship Fund for students attending Humphreys County Center for Higher Education in Waverly, TN. All profits from her book have been donated to the scholarship fund in recognition of her lifelong devotion to making higher education available to all who want it.
